Sonically, Marduk's fourth full-length album, Heaven Shall Burn. When We Are Gathered, was a step forward for the Swedish black metallers; this 1996 session boasted a cleaner, sharper production than their three previous albums. But stylistically, Marduk were still Marduk, and that meant an unwavering commitment to pummeling, skull-crushing black metal

With a new microphone fiend at their side, Marduk released, in 1996, Heaven Shall Burn... When We Are Gathered. Probably, in 1996, there were few Black Metal bands around, since this album revealed to be Marduk's breakthrough. No more content to sit in the corners, Marduk hired also Peter Tägtgren, one of the two producers responsible of many genre masterpieces (the other being Dan Swanö). When observed together, the producers' respective masterwork, there's no denying that they were more than two producers: they had also the best choices for every band they worked with. For Heaven Shall Burn, Peter chose to keep the Mayhem sound intact, except for the guitar. On De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, it floated. Here, it roars.Obviously, the Mayhem influence is pretty everywhere here (even if on the slower "Dracul Va Domni Din Nou in Transylvania" it would be difficult to recognize it), but Marduk distinguish themselves from the Norwegian band by writing catchier songs, with more recognizable structures and lyrics that are extremely long, and rarely staying between the bars ("Darkness It Shall Be, if removed of its march-like timing, would be the album's ideal single). The album is not only in the same spirit of Opus Nocturne, it also betters it on every aspect. The machinegun attack and riffing would be nothing if not being backed up by such a sanguine distortion, and being even shorter than the previous offering, Heaven Shall Burn is an even easier listening experience (even beyond considering the album's construction).Because its original duration is barely 35 minutes, the re-issue of the album adds demo versions of the album's sessions (two of them also present on Blackcrowned) for the American listeners. Whatever version you choose to pick, Heaven Shall Burn... When We Are Gathered it's still a perfect album in all sorts.Highlights:"Glorification of the Black God", "Darkness it Shall Be", "Dracul va Domini Din Nou in Transilvania."
