Partying Playful Summer Vacation. The second volume of Jody Stecher and Peter K. Siegel's odyssey into the Caribbean contains as many pearls as the first. There's perhaps a slightly wider range of artists, although the magical Joseph Spence and his family are well represented. But the members of Bruce Green's trio from Moores Island, with their splendid voices, show they deserved their hallowed reputation, as do the Swains. While most of the material is sacred, there are exceptions in the form of "King Canute," a solo vocal from Lyndall Albury (although even that has holy overtones), and Albury's.
While this isn't actually a Joseph Spence album, it might as well be, since he and his extended family play a big part on this disc, starting with the very first track. Recorded in 1966 (although Spence's "Don't Take Everybody to Be Your Friend" was actually recorded in the . during Spence's first tour), it's a revelation in the way the spiritual is used, its cadences and arrangements much more African than American - a distance of 200 miles can make a lot of difference

In 1958, Samuel Charters captured the sounds of celebration during of the anniversary weekend of emancipation known as August Monday. On the island of Andros, Charters recorded traditional ‘rake ‘n’ scrape’ music by the Fresh Creek Dance Band, a harmonica tune by Charles Bastian, a few numbers by two brass bands, guitar playing in the style of the island’s own Joseph Spence, and an extraordinarily rare example of Bahamian fife playing on I Drink All the Rum and Never Get Drunk. 101. I Drink All the Rum and Never Get Drunk, Bad Woman (medley).
Especially where music is concerned, the Caribbean is rarely viewed as a region. The archipelago that stretches from Belize across to Cuba- the so-called greater Antilles- down to Guyana are seeds of islands dispersed by the winds as Nobel-winning St Lucian Derek Walcott would say. And though the promotion of all-inclusive resort travel may have narrowed the definition of these disparate places to a series of warm and relaxing beach destinations, the range of culture and identity is, in actuality, incredibly wide.
