Listen free to Siouxsie and the Banshees – The Scream (Pure, Jigsaw Feeling and more). After building up an intense live reputation and a rabid fan base, Siouxsie and the Banshees almost had to debut with a stunner - which they did, "Hong Kong Garden" taking care of things on the singles front and The Scream on the full-length. Matched with a downright creepy cover and a fair enough early producing effort from Steve Lillywhite - well before he found gated drum sounds - it's a fine balance of the early band's talents

The Scream featured dark primal sounds accentuated by tribal percussion and jagged guitar work. This is highlighted on tracks such as Metal Postcard, and Overground, along noteworthy were the tracks Jigsaw Feeling, a cover of The Beatles Helter Skelter, and the stabbing screech of Suburban Relapse, The Scream changed everything-and one could argue that is was the first true Post-Punk LP, despite Magazine’s Real Life coming out 5 months earlier

Siouxsie and the Banshees are an anomaly of a band. Influenced by glam, beginning with punk, later lumped into post-punk revolution of the 1980s which they helped engineer, all with a certain goth swagger and a female lead singer (a very rare feature for such a rock band at the time), they could never be categorized as commonplace or static. Their consistent career and their unmistakably singular style have influenced a great many artists from Robert Smith and Morrissey to Shirley Manson and PJ Harvey. They opted not to include it on the album perhaps because it would have been too flamboyant among its surroundings. Indeed, The Scream is a muddier yet similarly brilliant affair from a band that seemed to know what they were doing even though they had just begun. The album begins with an interesting introduction to the band.

"The Scream" is an electrifying debut by the Banshees. Loud, raw, and energetic, it is one of the landmarks of the post-punk genre. Released in November '78, the album impressed critics with its innovative sound. At the time, there was nothing quite like it. To the press, this was like punk, but with darker overtones and slower tempos. As if The Velvet Underground had been blended with The Doors. To my ears, the record holds up exceptionally well. This is heavy uncompromising rock music that is challenging as it is enjoyable. Siouxsie Sioux gives a blistering vocal performance throughout every one of the songs. Her cover of The Beatles' "Helter Skelter" is simply astounding. The whole album itself is a mesmerizing listening experience. It's a must have for lovers of the early post-punk era. I would rate it with a B Plus.
