Mason Proffit's second album has an honest-to-God drum break in the beginning of "Old Joe Clark," and several good songs: the aforementioned "Old Joe Clark," "Hard Luck Woman," "Let Me Know Where You're Going," "Everybody Was Wrong" and maybe "Michael Dodge" are all worth many listens. Most of the others aren't bad either, but "He Loves Them" and a couple others are absolute stinkers, too genteel to be either rock or country

Mason Proffit was a country rock band from Champaign, Illinois that released five albums between 1969 and 1973. Brothers Terry Talbot and John Michael Talbot played together in several local bands around Indianapolis, Indiana and later in Chicago. After their group Sounds Unlimited disbanded, in 1969 they formed Mason Proffit with a focus on the emerging blend of folk, country and rock that would come to be called country rock.

Mason Proffit was formed in 1969 after the disbanding of Chicago garage rock group Sounds Unlimited. Brothers John Michael Talbot and Terry Talbot decided to form a new group that was more of a folk and country band. Mason Proffit, became a regional hit and helped their second album, Movin' Toward Happiness, chart on the Billboard 200. In 1972, the band signed to Warner Bros. Records and continued touring, performing up to 300 concerts each year. Some of Mason Proffit's opening acts during that time included The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, John Denver, and Mac Davis. Mason Proffit and 1971's Movin' Toward Happiness were released by Happy Tiger and 1971's Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream was released by Ampex. The band's fortunes took a positive turn in 1972 when they were signed by Warner Bros. and released Rockfish Crossing. They used their Warner Bros. In 1973 they released one last album, Bareback Rider, and then broke up. In 1974 Warner Bros. released a two-record set of Mason Proffit's Happy Tiger recordings.
