This Sinfonia is a tour-de-force of triple counterpoint. A fugue which explores permutations in this manner (see the "Art of Fugue") is called a "permutation fugue". That term has been applied to this movement. Of the six possible permutations, Bach uses four, three of them repeatedly (measure numbers in Arabic numbers): I-ii-iii 18 i-iii-ii 7, 24. Ii-i-iii 3, 13, 31 ii-iii-i.
Bach, J S: Sinfonia in D Major BWV 1052a. Bach, J S: Concerto in D Minor BWV 1059a. Here, interpreted by André Isoir, are J. S. Bach’s works for concertante organ, arranged in three programmes, specially compiled from his historic Calliope recordings, which intersperse the cantata sinfonias with obbligato organ, the concertos transcribed after Vivaldi, and the trio sonatas. La Dolce Volta offers an original approach to this repertory, cultivating through three coherently arranged programmes a new way of listening to pieces that are extremely diverse yet at the same time display close affinities.
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Inventions and Sinfonias become real musical pearls in Zhu Xiao Meis incomparably refined playing, peppered by a totally respectful imagination and creativity. Enchanting! (Pizzicato). This album was recorded in the Mendelssohn Room at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, which has lively acoustics that complement Zhu's playing without drowning her sound or taking the edge off her crisp articulation. Listeners who prefer to hear these pieces played on harpsichord may not care for any performances on piano, but Zhu is so meticulous and precise in her execution, even a Bach purist can appreciate her skills and ability to make these pieces intellectually and emotionally satisfying.
