Piano Concert in A minor, Op. 17 is both one of the most famous pieces in Paderewski’s repertoire, as well as one of the greatest Polish piano achievements. The composition is distinguished by beautiful melodics, subtle emotionality, a well-balanced virtuosity and transparent facture, especially of the solo instrument, as well as a clear construction. Paderewski’s work has beautiful themes, full of warmth in the first part, poetic in the romance and packed with passion in its finale; the orchestra is often combined with the piano in witty combinations, whereas the solo instrument is conducted exquisitely. The composition is distinguished by beautiful melodics, subtle emotionality, its well-balanced virtuosity and transparent facture, especially of the solo instrument, as well as a clear construction.

The Paderewski Piano Concerto is a beautiful work in the romantic style. Written when the composer was about 28 years old, it is dramatic, tuneful, virtuosic, and the work of a very skilled craftsman. At no time does one feel that the music is in any way fabricated as is the case, to one degree or another, with many of the forgotten concerted works of the great virtuoso pianist-composers. The recorded performances that follow are excellent. There are several very good performances of the Paderewski Piano Concerto below, one could not hope for more enthusiastic readings of the work. but I must single out the one by Jesús María Sanromá, an astonishing pianist about whom little is ever heard these days. Much the same could be said of the Fantasie Polonaise for Piano and Orchestra, Op 19 that was so appealing to Elgar.

The main sense of contrast in the first movement is conveyed not by variation of keys or of a primary and secondary theme, but by the distinction between the soloist's triplets and the orchestra's sturdy ritornello. Although originally written for Harpsichord, 2 Violins, Viola and Continuo, I created this Arrangement of the Concerto in F Minor (BWV 1056) for Piano Duet.
