The American Dream Q&A. What has the band said about the album? Vocalist John Floreani said the following about the album in an interview with Musicfeeds: This record is about my life in present time and a reflection on who I was and how I got here. I’ve always seen the concept of the American Dream as the idea that there’s this place that exists where you can start anew, and where if you work hard you can achieve what you want. I moved away from the shittiness I had going on in Australia and started again. That’s how I’ve always seen it, and at that point in my life, I wanted to get away from here and all the big city mess I was in when I was living in Australia. I wanted to run away and start again in some place where I didn’t have a history-where nobody knew about me and nobody knew who I was.
It makes me feel a certain way and it’s definitely going to be hard to play that and have the emotion behind the track as well, but I’m looking forward to experiencing that myself and looking forward to playing one of my favourite songs that I’ve ever written, I think that should be really fun. Can You Feel It is the first greatest hits album and the seventh album in total by Angel, released in 1989. It includes songs from their last three albums and one from the Foxes soundtrack. It was only released in cassette format. It became popular in the Chicago club scene and was often mixed with Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. The song later appeared on the 1988 Fingers Inc. album Another Side. In 1987, Rhythm Control released a track called "My House," which contained spoken word vocals from Chuck Roberts discussing the feeling and meaning of house music.
On The American Dream, it is. Floreani himself addresses any impending sellout accusations with lead single You Can Count on Me, grousing (albeit good-naturedly) that he has made emotional sacrifices to create this music, and if he keeps doing that, he can’t possibly sell out. It’s undoubtedly risky to preemptively address criticism, but the song is tongue-in-cheek enough to work, and there are kernels of wisdom in his lines about making music for anybody willing to receive it, not just for those who have liked the band in the past.
Putting the American Dream under the lens on a new album of dance-punk anthems, James Murphy discusses his band’s politically-charged resurrection – and decking Nazis. Did you feel guilty about being funny, given much of American Dream’s subject matter? James Murphy: Yeah, I understand (the kind of guilt you mean). I’ve worked on this record since 2015. I feel like the first record was not really, fully a record, it was just songs – which is what happens a lot of the time when people make a first record. Sound of Silver was a really hard record to make, and it kinda came out more cohesively as an album, and the third record was me trying to figure out what had worked. I don’t think this one’s a part of those three. I have no idea how it is as an album yet – that takes time, it has to live in the world, like a person. It’s a communication device – it depends on how it communicates.
Fourth album from James Murphy's Brooklyn dance-punk project and first since they reunited.
