Katie Doherty, born 1983, is a singer-songwriter based in the North East of England. In 2007 she won the Journal (Newcastle upon Tyne newspaper) Culture Award for Newcomer of the Year. She studied music at Newcastle University which included performance time at The Sage Gateshead. Through this she was discovered by the Folkworks initiative, which has championed her work in the past few years. At the Sage, she has supported Karine Polwart, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, and Ray Davies.
Heartbeat Ballroom from the album ‘And Then’ by Katie Doherty and the Navigators. With kind support from Arts Council England and Wallsend Action for Youth. She was the unanimous choice of judges Guy Chambers and Andy McClusky for the MBF award for Song Creation for her song Bridges which became the title track of her first album released on Park Records. Recently, she has been best-known for her work with theatre, having composed the score for the Award Winning rural touring musical Beyond the End of The Road, as well as countless others for November Club and Northern Stage, as well as New York Fringe Festival ‘Best of the Fringe’ Winner ‘The Fall’.
Doherty broadened her palette since 2007. She’s acted as composer for many Northern Stage productions, as well as MD for a Royal Shakespeare Company production. Theatricalities preside the album. Piano lounger Heartbeat Ballroom silhouettes with the grace of a ballet piece, ballad A Rose In Winter harkens the prose James Goldman gifted Peter O’Toole, Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton. Tiny Little Shoes steeped in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s fingerprints sounds like an invitation for chanteuse Elaine Page to record.
