Alan Lomax - Prison Blues of the South: Live at the MS & LA State Penitentiary album download

Recorded by Alan Lomax in the early '30s at the Mississippi and Louisiana State Penitentiaries, this album is a musicologist's or roots-music lover's dream-come-true. The performers are all inmates, and the only accompaniment to their voices is the rhythmic thud of their picks as they hit the ground. Some of the voices and harmony singing is surprisingly good, and there are interesting bits of interview interspersed. Laserlight has done a great job (as usual) with the sound on this disc, which was transferred from the original acetates.

These recordings were made in 1947 in the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman. Only the sight of an occasional armed guard or a barred window in one of the frame dormitories made one realise that this was a prison. The land produced the same crop; there was the same work for the Negroes to do on both sides of the fence. And there was no Delta Negro who was not aware of how easy it was for him to find himself on the wrong side of those few strands of barbed wire.
