The gloomy, rainy streets of Westminster set the tone for this record and provide the perfect scenery for this witty foray into Vaudeville foolery. Fiendish and vile, Momus, aka Nick Currie, indulges once again in character portrayals of the most ghastly type.
According to the sleeve notes on his 2016 compilation album Pubic Intellectual, this album had a convoluted start, Momus says: In 1992 I made two LP’s; one was electronic, the other vaudevillian. The Ultraconformist claimed to have been recorded live at the Vorticist nightclub The Cave of the Golden Calf in 1910. Mike Alway had a new label called Richmond and he wanted a record from me, despite my exclusive deal with Creation. So I wrote these rather Brechtian songs, dubbed on some applause from a Polish cabaret record, and gave him a pseudo-live album with deliberately lo-fi production
