Masaaki Suzuki - Bach: Cantatas, Vol. 33 album download

The inner arias of these cantatas are mostly quite pictorial, and Suzuki works well with the singers to forge readings that are vivid without being overly theatrical. Hear bass Dominik Wörner in "Das Brausen von den rauhen Winden" (The howling of the rough winds), from the same cantata; he doesn't engage this fearsomely difficult aria in mortal combat, but smoothly elides the runs of sixteenth notes in such a way as to evoke the sound of the winds themselves.

Masaaki Suzuki and Bach Collegium Japan return with three church cantatas written for the end of 1724 and early 1725 while Bach was Thomaskantor (Kapellmeister) in Leipzig. All three are chorale cantatas, Bach's favoured type, and are therefore based on pre-existing Lutheran hymns: Jesu, nun sei gepreiset uses a hymn from 1591 by Johannes Hermann, Ich hab in Gottes Herz und Sinn uses one from 1647 by Paul Gerhardt, and Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir uses another by Paul Eber from 1554.

S. Bach · Cantatas – Vol. Format: 24 File, FLAC, Album, Reissue. Contralto Vocals, Soloist – Robin Blaze (tracks: 1 to 6, 16 to 21). Directed By, Harpsichord – Masaaki Suzuki. Engineer – Jens Braun.

On the present, 33rd instalment Masaaki Suzuki has chosen to open with a jubilant New Year cantata, Jesu, nun sei gepreiset, first performed on 1 January 1725. Only a few weeks later BWV 92 was performed, exhorting the congregation of Bach's Thomaskirche in Leipzig to surrender to God’s will and God’s hand. In this unusually long cantata Bach pays special attention to creating variety, and illustrates the text with powerful musical images. The closing cantata is BWV130, composed for Michaelmas - a feast day in celebration of the Archangel Michael and all the angels. Again a festive work,.
