Pete Swanson has released a handful of cassette and LPs since his electronic noise duo Yellow Swans disbanded in 2008, but none have offered something this easy- or oddly danceable- to latch onto. That description certainly fits Man With Potential, perhaps more than any other record he's been involved with. But none has offered something this easy to latch onto. It comes in the form of a consistent, prominent beat- so prominent that some claim Swanson has "gone techno. This isn't completely new territory for him, though- Yellow Swans could drop a heavy beat too, especially on their throbbing 2004 album Bring the Neon War Home
Listen free to Pete Swanson – Man With Potential (Misery Beat, Remote View and more). Much has been made of the re-emergence of beats in experimental music, but if you listened carefully enough to Pete Swanson’s output to this point you’ll realize those rhythms have been present for a long time. The New York-based artist might still be best known for being a member of now defunct noise duo Yellow Swans, but he’s made plenty of solo music since then, even if it has been quite difficult to obtain.
A few seconds into Yellow Swans co-founder Pete Swanson's first album for Type and it seems like he's done the same. The producer's usual crawling sheets of fermenting frequencies are forcefully pried apart, leaving an uncomfortable void that hints towards forward movement before a barreling kick drum appears. The album's title track takes that last part most literally, a blinding screen of white-hot flames interlocking in a dense, dizzying weave, with only the faintest hints of melody brooding behind. Instead of appropriating techno, Swanson has merely opened up his music to new modes of being: sometimes that takes the form of a feverish kick driving the song from a distance ("Far Out") or sometimes it's a less conventional, more sporadic rhythmic thrust ("A&OxO").

Potential – not to mention Container’s similar approach on his less satisfying 2011 full-length – feels like a considered strategy for shifting and expanding the psychedelic scope, and impact, of his art. Though it might be well-timed in light of concurrent developments and fashions, one can instinctively tell that Swanson has reached this point by his own methods, and at his own pace. Misery Beat’ opens the album, driven by a kickdrum of Millsian velocity, drizzled with electronic bleeps and bloops that feel like a radiophonic experiment gone awry. Noise might not be about detail or rigorous design, but like the best techno it’s partly about the command of space – and though they might sound crude on first listen, the compositions that comprise Man With Potential are beautifully weighted and, dare I say it, arranged.
