London Philharmonic Orchestra Matthias Bamert – conductor. Parry struggled to find his voice at a time when English music had been moribund since Handel's era. Just as he was maturing, Elgar sprang out of the blue and more or less eclipsed him. Undoubtedly Elgar was the greater composer, so it was very tough on Parry
The importance of Charles Hubert Parry to the renaissance of English musical life is often underestimated, but like his equally great colleague in that endeavor, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, Parry is more often found in music encyclopedias than on the programs of modern orchestras. His profound influence on generations of composers, exerted during his years as director of the Royal College of Music, qualifies him as a genuine paterfamilias to music in the British Isles. Apart from the five symphonies, this collection includes: The Soul's Ransom The Lotos Eaters Concertstück in F minor Symphonic Variations From Death to Life Elegy for Brahms.

Symphonic Variations; Concertstück in G minor; From Death to Life; Elegy for Brahms. Performer: LPO/Matthias Bamert. Label: Chandos Collect. From Death to Life is Grand Old Man’s music – in the best and the worst senses of the phrase, but Elegy for Brahms probes more deeply, and the long-lost Concertstück is a real surprise: the young Parry as an intense Wagnerian modernist. Performances are authoritative and the recordings are up to Chandos’s highest standards – a perfect introduction to Parry the symphonic thinker.

Classical music CD release from London Philharmonic Orchestra with the album Parry: Symphonic Variations From Death to Life, Elegy for Brahms. Released on the label Chandos Records. The Elegy to Brahms is a deeply felt work and one of Parry's most beautiful utterances, with strong and memorable thematic material worked out with powerful emotional effect. The two movement From Death to Life was composed in the shadow of the First World War, with a deeply elegiac first half and more optimistic ending.
