But he does bring something new to Lonely Avenue, and I’m punching my finger into the table as I say that, because what he brings to the song is his vision, his rendition, his atmosphere. Listen to this special production for what it is, and not what it isn’t, and I promise you you’ll have a grand time.
What gives it an edge, though, is Crawford and McGriff riffing in the excellent company of Wayne Boyd on guitar and funkmaster Bernard Purdie on sticks. It takes you to a smoky club of long ago, when this kind of group could be heard by the dozens in any major city. In between, it's a little more predictable. I Only Have Eyes For You" and "Summertime" serve up the corn in ways that Crawford and McGriff have perfected over the years. But their surprising, soulful redux of John Coltrane's "Mr. " is redeeming and worthwhile.

This album Smooth Groove was his chance as a leader, his first album under his own name . Sadly the label closed down shortly thereafter and only re-emerged on Candid decades later. In retrospect it seems incredible that a musician of such talent and sensitivity should not have been awarded greater recognition and exposed to a wider international audience all these years. Guitarist Ray Crawford, born in Pittsburgh in 1924, began his career playing tenor sax and clarinet. While living in Pittsburgh, he started a group with Art Blakey. He performed with Fletcher Henderson from 1941 to 1943.
Right: 'It's About Time' album cover, 2018. For the cover of Chic's debut, Rodgers explained, we thought we could get supermodels on our cover to basically the concept of Chic, to say that we were going back in time to a period where music was all about the underclass coming up. It was all about Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. It was all about the prohibition era and the era of the big jazz bands. That’s why we weren’t on the cover . On June 22, the band will officially release the first single from It's About Time, "Till the World Falls", featuring Mura Masa, Anderson. Paak, Vic Mensa, and Cosha, four prominent talents that help to prove Chic’s knowledge of where we’re heading.
