Chet Baker: Career 1952-1988 by David Rickert, published on July 14, 2005. One is from the pioneering Gerry Mulligan Quartet at the early part of Baker's career; the other comes from a live performance two weeks before his untimely death. The critics hated his version of the song, as did many of his peers. But it's the song most associated with Baker, and one that always brought out his fragile and melancholy side, regardless of whether he sang it or played it. As a career retrospective, this set is hard to beat

Chesney Henry "Chet" Baker, Jr. (December 23, 1929 – May 13, 1988) was an American jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist and singer.

The only collection to cover all phases of Chet Baker's remarkable career! Deluxe 2-CD set with 60-page booklet! Chet Baker, the paragon of cool jazz, is one of the enduring greats, known for both his trumpet playing and his equally fragile-sounding singing. Early on, his good looks made him the James Dean of jazz. But his musical gifts never deserted him, as Career 1952–1988 amply demonstrates. This 2-CD set provides a complete overview of his entire career.

Chet Baker was a second or even third-tier trumpeter but an often first-class singer. Trumpeter and singer Chet Baker has the distinction of being a highly complex artist whose art was based almost entirely on simplicity. This Career retrospective provides a mostly illuminating view of his art and his contradictions, and it demonstrates why Baker was both a beloved and, ultimately, unexceptional jazz musician. This compilation reflects the bifurcated nature of Baker's career and talent. Disc One is devoted to Baker's instrumental art.
