But what’s so special about LEO? Low Earth orbit is not very high. Yes, we think about LEO as being way up there in space-and it is indeed very high. The International Space Station orbits 400 km above the Earth’s surface. You can barely see it at all. But what about a geostationary orbit? A geostationary satellite is at an orbital distance such that its angular speed is the same as that of the Earth. This means that as it orbits it appears to be above the same spot on the equator of the Earth. Here is another simulation to show the distance of a geostationary satellite. Humans don’t really go to a geostationary orbit. It’s all about LEO (for now). LEO is more about speed than altitude. Let’s pretend like there is no air on the surface of the Earth. Now you want to launch a satellite into low Earth orbit.

Have you ever wondered what satellites and different low orbit objects fly right now over your head? At this very moment there are 49 satellites higher than 45 degrees altitude. In total there are 148 objects but most of them are space debris orbiting the Earth. This number does not include the geosynchronous and geostationary satellites. See what's up in your sky!

What's Up?" is a song by American rock group 4 Non Blondes from their 1992 debut album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More! It was released as the album's second single in 1993. It was successful in the United States and in several European countries, peaking at number one in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and Switzerland.
