Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 1; Schubert: Symphony No. 5; Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 22 in E flat, K482. Performer: Cappella Andrea Barca/ András Schiff (piano). Somehow that seemed to diminish Schubert, if only though its complete lack of individuality (the performance’s, not the work’s). There is an element of the standard product about the whole concert – not aided by Schiff’s playing of Beethoven’s excruciatingly long and tiresome cadenza in the first movement of his great First Concerto. That music is so bad that only the conceit of performers can make them play it.

The piano is a Bechstein, although the booklet contains no further details. It's a less beefy sound than a Steinway, and this suits it to Schiff's take on late Mozart and early Beethoven. The Beethoven he places firmly in the post-Mozartian lineage. This is not Beethoven the nascent revolutionary, angrily tearing up the keyboard, but Beethoven the classicist, learning from his Viennese-school elders and basing his outlook on Mozart's two late C major concertos, K467 and (especially) K503.

Prokofiev's last piano concerto dates from 1932, a year after he finished the fourth piano concerto, whose solo part is for left hand only. According to the composer, he was then inspired to write another for two hands, whose intended simplicity was reflected in the desire to call it, not a concerto, but rather 'Music for Piano and Orchestra.
