Cantus - Song of a Czech (Cantus CTS 1213). Most recently, their sojourn found them exploring the music of two famous 19th-century composers of what is now the Czech Republic. One way in which Dvořák and Janáček were similar in their writing for men's chorus was through their use of Czech folk melodies. While they didn't quote these melodies directly, the Czech spirit was very much alive, say Reinwald and Ruschman. 'Song of the Czech' by Dvořák, it's introspective nationalism," Ruschman explains. So unlike the bombast and the rockets' red glare that we tend to associate with patriotism here, this is, 'What does it really mean in my soul to be Czech, to be Bohemian?'
With this recording of repertoire by two giants of Czech musical history, Cantus explores literature rarely heard outside of eastern Europe, lending their trademark warmth, blend and exemplary musicianship to these treasures of the choral canon. Genre: Classical: Choral Music. We'll ship when it's back in stock. The newest recording from Cantus, Song of a Czech, focuses on the works of Antonín Dvořák and Leoš Janáček, who were two of the giants of Czech musical history, as well as great personal friends. Both wrote music for male chorus, taking similar inspiration from folksongs of their native lands of Bohemia and Moravia, and from all over Eastern Europe. Janáček dedicated his Four Male Partsongs to Dvořák, who dubbed them a gift with great promise, and in these times a truly special one.
