At two separate times, Felix Mendelssohn composed music for William Shakespeare's play, A Midsummer Night's Dream. First in 1826, near the start of his career, he wrote a concert overture (Op. 21). Later, in 1842, only a few years before his death, he wrote incidental music (Op. 61) for a production of the play, into which he incorporated the existing Overture. The incidental music includes the world-famous Wedding March. The German title reads Ein Sommernachtstraum.

Mendelssohn has rarely featured in his concert programmes and discography, but Chailly clearly had to inaugurate his reign as ter in Leipzig (a post occupied by the composer between 1835 and 1846) with the miraculously precocious Midsummer Night’s Dream overture and the Sinfonie-Kantate, or Hymn of Praise, a homage to Beethoven and Bach. In the overture, the gossamer lightness of the strings and mellow winds are a joy, but the main work is a tougher nut to crack - it’s a fine performance, but somewhat muddily recorded, and the soprano soloist’s words are all but inaudible.
