9.4 / 10 [] Brilliantly incorporating dreamy synth pop and post punk, Wild Nothing's Nocturne channels many different influences: Eno, Bowie, Roxy Music, OMD, New Order, the Cure, to name a few. The album itself, as with Wild Nothing in general, amounts to more than just the sum of its influences, however, as the music definitely has its own unique feel and sound. It's instantly catchy, and yet layered and deep in a way that the music grows on you with repeated listens. Its lyrics and moods are both celebratory and sadly introspective. While the title track, nocturne, revels in a sort of beautifully realized nostalgic joy, the album's closing track, Rheya, is an equally gorgeous and crushingly sad take on lost love. This album sounds like a step forward from their already great debut album, Gemini. The introduction of a backing band helps flesh out the songs a bit and adds new layers of complexity. Simply put, this is one of the best albums released in the past few years, from any genre.

2nd release from Virginia band: These are absolutely stunning, full and warm dream-pop songs that pull you in with a wistful, loving despair—like the extended hand of a forlorn friend seeking to meld. Beautiful, haunting melodies that hint of the brittle, celestial fragility favored by 4AD and Factory label bands in the 80s, mixed with the oddly heartrending poignancy of Postcard label bands. Gorgeous, gently gripping, rhythmic music that begs for your immersion; an open-armed invitation to wallow in dreamy ecstasy. Members from Jack and the Whale, Facepaint, the Chevelles. Recalls bands like Beach House, Aztec Camera, Jesus & Mary Chain, Orange Juice, New Order, Cocteau Twins, Weird Dreams, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. An amazing bit of modern pop sweetness to warm your soul, and a stand-out moment for music in 2012.
