The choice to include Pictures at an Exhibition on a first recording is a curious one. The work has been recorded so frequently that very little new remains that can be done to it. Sokhiev 's interpretation is a bit on the slow side in most movements. The sound of the orchestra, however, is quite enjoyable. Every instrument is superbly clear, well balanced, and articulate. Actually, the overall recorded sound of the entire album is quite pleasing. The Tchaikovsky is also quite clean, but is more forward moving than the Mussorgsky

Of course, it consists of two Russian orchestral warhorses - well, 'Pictures at an Exhibition' is really Franco-Russian, having been orchestrated by Ravel - of which one could argue we don't need any new recordings. And they don't really tell us a lot about a new conductor, do they? Well, perhaps not, but both these performances are sensational.
The seriousness with which Sokhiev invests Musorgsky the gallery-goer also suffuses the darker pictures, reminding us that this is a memorial tribute to an artist friend and putting the interpretation in a class of its own. Sokhiev is particularly good at drawing soulful colours from key players in the many solos master-orchestrator Ravel gives them: a wistful clarinet at the heart of ‘Tuileries’, the lumbering tuba in ‘Bydlo’, the plaintive oboe in the funeral chant of ‘Cum mortuis’. Ensembles, too, are distinctively moulded and shaped. This album makes a seemingly effortless case for the music of these composers'.
