Frank SInatra released one more LP of ballads for Capitol after this record came out, but Come Swing With Me! is often seen as the end of his golden streak with the label. This album is well-known among audiophiles for its acute stereophonic settings; listening to this album on headphones can be a unique experience to say the least. Come Swing With Me! is also distinctive since Billy May didn't include a reed or string section in the orchestra he led for this recording session. The heavy brass definitely lends a cocky vibe to a singer who isn't exactly known for a lack of confidence. To the surprise of no one, the setlist for this record largely draws from the tried-and-true songs of the swing era. Sinatra breezes his casual swagger through "Day By Day", "Almost Like Being In Love", and "On The Sunny Side Of The Street" like the seasoned veteran that he was. The writing credits of this album see names like Rodgers & Hart, Harold Arlen, Lerner & Lowe, Johnny Mercer, and a bunch of other people who are very familiar to those who study the Great American Songbook. However, that isn't to say that there aren't a few lesser-known cuts here and there. "American Beauty Rose" is a charming love song that drowns the listener in lyrical flower metaphors. "Yes, Indeed" is a gospel-styled number by Sy Oliver that makes Frank Sinatra sound like a tourist while he's singing it. This song comes off like it accidentally wandered in from the Ray Charles set that it properly belongs to. This album's title, as well as Billy May's presence at the bandstand, has led many to compare Come Swing With Me! to Frank Sinatra's Come Fly With Me! and Come Dance With Me! albums. It's arguably the weakest of the trilogy, but I wouldn't place it in third place by a substantial margin. Practically all of Sinatra's Capitol albums maintain a certain standard of quality and Come Swing With Me! has said quality in bulk.

This is swing, this is a record to dance from the first to the last song, enjoying the musical phrasing of Sinatra and the amazing atmosphere created by Billy May. These are re-creations of known tunes and shows that interpretation is indeed an art.

Built on torchier songs and dixie tunes, Come Swing with Me! remains as one of the worst Sinatra albums. The pacing--putting "Sentimental Journey" as track two for instance--is haphazard. People cite these "contractual obligation" albums as being purposefully bad. I can only agree with the sentiments with this album.Certain songs work, such as "Day by Day" or "That Old Black Magic." But even then, those better moments put into perspective the lesser moments like "American Beauty Rose" or "On the Sunny Side of the Street." "Don't Take Your Love from Me" was a missed opportunity--one rectified by a rare version with Don Costa the next year. "Paper Doll" and "Almost Like Being in Love" are good, but overshadowed by the arrangements themselves. Come Swing with Me! at least has Billy May's brassy charts to save the day. In fact, the stereophonic display of the record's sound makes for a great listen when you only listen to the instruments. It became a sort of structural concept behind the piece. Other than that, however, there isn't much good to say about Come Swing with Me! Sinatra-May would appear again in 1961 with a much better record for Reprise, but for the time being, at least we all have "Day by Day" to listen to.Highlights: "Day by Day," "Almost Like Being in Love," "I've Heard that Song Before."
