Music for the Advancement of Hip Hop is a compilation album released by American hip hop record label Anticon in 1999.
Mainly produced by 1200 Hobos members Signify and Mayonnaise, Music for the Advancement of Hip Hop starts with an old-school display of turntablism. These DJ interludes reappear throughout the album, and range from enjoyable to merely skip-worthy. Some do segue nicely into actual songs, but that’s about it. The DJ’s do, however, produce a number of songs on this album, with Sixtoo, Jel, Moodswing9, and Mr. Skurge. All of the instrumentals here are enjoyable earworms; I can hear many cymbal riffs, ethereal sounds, guitar loops, and horns that signify (no pun intended) live instrumentation

Anticon's sound is an acquired taste. The various MC's that make up Anticon almost seem like they want to be different. They revel in it. They want to push boundaries of hip hop. They may not, but they try. On the beat of "It's Them" you hear it repeat a few times then it gets cut up and slowed down and Dose flows with the choppy beat. or does it?" doesn't really do much for the listener. One bright spot on this album is "Nothing but Sunshine" by Slug.

When this album came out in 1999, underground rap was really starting to take off. This CD was an excellent tool for me when I started listening to underground hip-hop. In fact, this CD is one of the direct reasons I started to listen to hip-hop again. I grew up hating rap, mostly because I started listening when commercial rap started really sucking (which is why I stuck to old-school). But in many ways, Anticon started this explosion of "alternative rap". But the title of the album still holds strong.
Starting in 2005, sales of hip hop music in the United States began to severely wane, during the mid-2000s, alternative hip hop secured a place in the mainstream, due in part to the crossover success of artists such as OutKast and Kanye West
