Ms. Merrill has a warm, intimate, lovely sound and style. The tunes she's included on the album are all very tasty, and she's in the very best company with the musicians backing her: Clifford Brown Sextet, among others, and the arrangers: Quincy Jones, Richard Heymen. There is a quality throughout the album that I personally find in short supply these days: ROMANCE.
Helen Merrill is the debut studio album by vocalist Helen Merrill, on which she's accompanied by trumpeter Clifford Brown in arrangements by the young Quincy Jones. Brown had recorded a somewhat similar album with Sarah Vaughan only a few days previously, on December 16 and 18, 1954. In 1995, on the fortieth anniversary of this debut album, Merrill recorded a tribute album to Brown, who had been killed in a car crash in 1956, the year after their collaborative album was released.

Best known of her recordings are her classic collaborations with Clifford Brown on seven selections arranged by Quincy Jones (including "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" and "Falling in Love With Love"), but almost as significant was a notable album on which she employed the little-known Gil Evans as arranger, a year before he teamed up with Miles Davis.
