Still retaining the elements of what Ihsahn brought to Emperor, but venturing into more territory as seen by the appearance of michael from Opeth another band that has progressed/evolved throughout the years. This release as well as all future material by Ihsahn is for the more open minded fan of music rather than closed in box mentality of sum of the more die-hard black metal fans.
Released date 27 May 2008. Labels Candlelight Records Mnemosyne Productions. Music StyleProgressive Black. Ihsahn can comfortably be defined as a musical genius, a virtuoso and progenitor of 4 of the finest metal albums ever to appear on the radar of this writer’s musical experience. Every Emperor release was a masterclass in technicality, atmosphere, arrangement and inspiration. In the Nightside Eclipse’ is a cornerstone of my listening evolution, the black metal album that got me into it, as its scope and delivery was just so impressive to me. But what since Emperor’s self-inflicted demise ?
Ihsahn's second album, angL, has slowly but surely become one of my more played metal albums. The man behind the legendary Emperor really has some diverse talent, and it shows here. The music here is incredibly varied and a testament to Ihsahn and his ability as a songwriter. Make no mistake, I loved The Adversary. It was everything it should have been, catchy, memorable, stupidly over the top (in a King Diamond sort of way). It was a great album, and knowing Ihsahn’s consistent output, I expected great things from angL (seriously, GET A BETTER NAME). I’ve been terribly let down though, because angL is everything the previous album wasn’t.
Before I imply that angL is a disjointed, unlistenable mess, it should be known that fans of The Adversary will certainly enjoy what the album has to offer, at least on the surface. This is because, as noted, the songs on angL sound almost exactly like the songs off of The Adversary, but this time around it somehow feels different. If possible, it almost feels like Ihsahn has gone solo again, which is to imply that he broke off another chunk of his sound and ran with it. What he ran with was the swooping, symphonically shaded "progressive" black metal The Adversary thrived off of.
Ihsahn's second solo album, Angl, maintains the symphonic black metal orientation that the Norwegian vocalist favored on his previous solo outing, The Adversary, and while black metal is Angl's main ingredient, there are certainly many other influences as well. Among them: power metal, progressive metal, death metal, and gothic metal. Angl is very focused, but at the same time, Ihsahn is even more unpredictable and far-reaching on this 47-minute CD than he was on The Adversary. He is also decidedly melodic, achieving a healthy balance of heaviness and musicality.
