The B-52s - With the Wild Crowd! Live in Athens, GA album download

Live in Athens, GA, represents the first official, non-bootleg live set from the B-52's to date. Recorded in 2011, the 18-song set offers up a nice mix of old and new, blazing through beloved standbys like Love Shack, Rock Lobster, Roam, and Planet Claire with more gusto than one would expect from a band halfway into its third decade. Anyone who's ever been to a B-52's show know that Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, and Cindy Wilson never phone it in, and now they've finally got the goods to prove it.

The B-52s performed their first ever gig in February 1977. 34 years later, on Valentine's Day 2011, they returned to their home town of Athens, Georgia to celebrate with this brilliant live show. Wig-wearing, boa-draped, glitter-covered fans came to join in and saw the band deliver a sizzling 90 minute set that turned Athens' Classic Center into a cosmic dancehall. A B-52s live show is always the best party in town, yet here in front of their home crowd they even managed to turn it up a notch further

Well, I can't believe some die-hard fan hasn't posted a review. Will you settle for a casual fan? Machts Nicht because here goes. The B-52-s were an important musical landmark in the late 70's and it deserves not to fade away. And not fad away the B-52s do here. They're in fine form. The songs hold up way better than they should, perhaps because they were never redundant in the first place blazing a new sound. I think of it as surf meets urban punk. Call it what you will it's really catchy. Coming from Athens Georgia the band blazed a trail for an important new music center that soon enough we'd realize wasn't a one-trick town. This is an excellent homecoming some 30-years later. Chief of all attributes this beat driven fun party music which gives it an extended shelf-life. It's still poignant that Ricky Wilson was lost so long ago, but this is not anything if not a pure celebration of the great catalog of songs that were imbued with that strange chording hook which was Ricky's signature sound. He hovers large. Keith Strickland picked up the mantle most excellently as is obvious. Why should this be an important concert DVD/CD? Because it broke molds and, amazingly, people from all corners of the world stood up and listened. That's the power of music and in this, perhaps, it's not unique...But, overall, the groundbreaking band is still quite unique in and of themselves. You've just got to think at least for a tear in time there was something mystical in the water in Athens, Georgia. Watching this great concert, and soaking in the sonic pleasures, it just hits hard. Here's a great band that probably never should have made it out of town but conquered the world. There's still enough of that lost time here so just watch and listen and be swept away. In the barren rock landscape of 2016 it seems even better.
