Bruno Walter was Mahler's friend, pupil, and confidant. These are truly great recordings. One person found this helpful. Format: Audio CDVerified Purchase.
There is some doubt as to when Bruno Walter (1876-1962) commenced his recording career. In a famous recorded interview (included with some, but not all, issues of his stereo recording of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony) Walter declared that he made his first recordings in Berlin in ‘either 1900 or 1901’. He then went on to describe the difficulties of making recordings at that time. Yet his earliest recordings which have turned up and been documented so far appear to be Polydor and these (English) Columbia Graphophone Company recordings from the first half of the nineteen-twenties.
This box set contains the complete symphonies of Beethoven and Brahms, the later symphonies of Mozart, symphonies of Mahler and Bruckner, CDs with rehearsals and many more. The German born conductor Bruno Walter (1876-1962) was known primarily for his interpretations of the Viennese school.

But that started my secret passion for Bruno Walter’s conducting style. He was a German-Jewish conductor who escaped the Third Reich’s persecution of the Jews during World War II and fled to the United States. In fact, he was one of the greatest conductors of the 20th Century, but he was quite old when he got around to recording albums with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra.
