Titati After a six year absence from the recording studio, Malian guitarist Habib Koité and his band Bamada return with a stunning new album. Afriki finds the group in fine form, and features an appealing set of songs that reflect Habib's unique approach to the diverse styles of Malian music.
In the six years since Mali's Habib Koite released his last new studio album, he developed a reputation in the West as one of his country's greatest cultural exports. On Afriki, Koite has fine-tuned his carefully manicured approach to melodic, acoustic-based songs of deep personal and global meaning. Always an engaging singer and songwriter, Koite's guitar is on equal footing here; his playing and the overall musicianship of his band, Bamada, outshines anything they offered in their previous outings.

The Malian singer Habib Koité has been caught up in a whirlwind of activity in recent years, touring non-stop on the international scene and getting involved in all sorts of projects putting African music on the map. Given his hectic schedule it has been a few years since Koité set foot in the studio himself, but he has finally released his long-awaited fifth album, Afriki. The album, recorded with his loyal group Bamada, finds the singer adopting new working methods to fit his globe-trotting lifestyle.
The American view has been rather different. Rolling Stone once hailed Habib Koite as "Mali's biggest pop star", while Bonnie Raitt even compared him to Jimi Hendrix. Well, he has certainly sold a lot of records, but success has not been good for him, if this soporific offering is anything to go by. He is, for certain, a fine acoustic guitarist, and he has a gloriously easy-going vocal style.
