William Bradford "Bill" Keith (December 20, 1939 – October 23, 2015) was a five-string banjoist who made a significant contribution to the stylistic development of the instrument. In the 1960s he introduced a variation on the popular "Scruggs style" of banjo playing (an integral element of bluegrass music) which would soon become known as melodic style, or "Keith style".

I first met Bill Keith at the IBMA World of Bluegrass in Owensboro, Kentucky, in 1988 or 1989. Time and time again, I would see Bill sharing his considerable knowledge about the banjo, music theory, thoughts on banjo construction and set-up, the engineering involved in the construction of Keith Tuners, and not only in the classroom. Master of bluegrass banjo who brought complex fiddle tunes into the repertoire. Bill Keith, who has died aged 75, was a banjo player whose influence on bluegrass music in the 1960s and 70s was second only to that of the original bluegrass banjoist, Earl Scruggs. In particular his expansion of banjo technique to incorporate the playing of complex fiddle tunes inspired a generation of musicians to extend both their own skills and the scope of the bluegrass repertoire. His influence on the next generation was signalled by the 1981 album Fiddle Tunes for Banjo, on which he was joined by the younger banjoists Tony Trischka and Béla Fleck. Keith was not only a great player, said his old friend Rooney, but a great teacher and mentor to young players.
